India’s ties with Canada soured under the government of Carney’s predecessor Justin Trudeau over several issues, including the activities of Khalistani separatists in the country. Trudeau had also accused the Indian government of its involvement in the murder of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, India had denied the claims. As ties turned frosty over the issue, both the nations even expelled each other’s diplomats.
Canada is hosting the G7 summit from June 15-17, where leaders are expected to discuss major global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the ongoing situation in West Asia.
The G7 is an informal group of the world’s most industrialised countries France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and Canada. The European Union also participates in its discussions, alongside global institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the United Nations.
