Guwahati, June 6: In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a massive consignment of methamphetamine tablets worth ₹16 crore on June 3. The operation, conducted on the Aizawl-Champhai Road, intercepted a vehicle suspected to be transporting narcotics on the outskirts of Aizawl.
Upon inspection, DRI officials discovered 16 brick-sized packages of pink/orange methamphetamine tablets cleverly concealed in specially fabricated compartments beneath the rear seat and inside the fuel tank of the vehicle. The total weight of the contraband was 16 kg.
Two individuals—the driver and his accomplice—were arrested on the spot under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, which mandates stringent punishment, including rigorous imprisonment of up to 10 years.
The initial investigation revealed that the methamphetamine was smuggled in from Myanmar, highlighting the ongoing challenge of narcotics infiltration across India’s porous northeastern borders.
However, the operation took a dramatic turn the following morning, June 4, when one of the arrested suspects assaulted DRI officials and escaped custody while being produced before the court. In a swift joint operation involving DRI personnel, local police, and alert community members, the fugitive was tracked down and re-arrested in Hridaikawn, Tlangnuam, on the outskirts of Aizawl.
This incident marks the second major seizure of methamphetamine in Mizoram within a week. On May 30, the DRI had recovered 9.72 kg of meth tablets in a separate case in Seling, leading to another arrest.
The DRI lauded the support of local communities and law enforcement agencies and reiterated the importance of collective vigilance. “The active cooperation of the public is crucial in combating the menace of drug smuggling that threatens our youth and society,” a DRI official said.
